How
hard is it to find a used outboard?
The
used outboard market is not an easy one to follow. These days
outboards are very expensive new, and second hand they are not
that much cheaper.
For
those of you who are looking for a used outboard and dont know
much about them, make sure you have a marine mechanic inspect
it before you purchase if possible. I owned a 63 Johnson that
was 40 years old and still gave us some great times. Its all about
how it's been looked after and a bit of luck as well.
Anything
can be fixed to work as it did when first purchased, and often
a used outboard is the only option if you have a tight budget.
But be warned if you have to fix something every 3 or 4 trips
you may be playing with fire....literally. If you are not experienced
in boating we suggest you go for the later models. The last thing
you want is an explosion on the back of your boat and this does
happen, as has happened to me! A common rule of thumb is any outboard
over 20 years old should be very carefuly considered. If you venture
into open waters you need to be sure you can get home safely.
Generally
look at the condition of the outside of the engine and it is probably
a good indication of whats inside. Yes i'm generalising but ask
anyone else. Look for repairs, are parts original etc Its easy
to spray a prop and change a cover. Open her up and look inside.
At the end of the day these outboards can last for years..but
they can also be blown in a few.
Talk
to a marine mechanic, make sure the compression is about the same
over all cylinders, look for problems before they become a problem.
Just because she starts does not mean she will start the next
time.
Always
carry a fire extuinguisher....it can save your life so dont go
without one.
A
used outboard can give you an excellent boating experience and
we encourage you to explore your options.

This tiny crack led to a fire!
A 1963 Johnson Seahorse, gave us many hours of fun on the water,
however a small crack in the fuel out valve turned this girl into
a firecracker on her last voyage in Nelson Bay. If you smell fuel,
investigate before you go out.
