Yamaha Outboards

As environmental consciousness grows around the world, boat owners want engines that are clean-running and fuel efficient, so more and more four-stroke outboard models are being built to answer these needs. But, from the standpoint of performance, a four stroke needs bigger displacement to match the power output of a two-stroke.

With the larger horsepower models, however, it was considered virtually impossible until now to build a four-stroke as compact and light as a two-stroke of the same horsepower. Just look at the size of a four-stroke 225hp automobile engine and you will see why. With the F225A, innovative thinking enabled Yamaha engineers to revolutionise the big-displacement four-stroke, using new design concepts and technology to build a motor so light (only 10% more than a two-stroke) and so compact it mounts beautifully on boats designed to the 225 class.

What made this unprecedented compactness ad light weight possible was a revolutionary Yamaha design called the “In-Bank-Exhaust-System” which reverses the intake and exhaust system layout of a conventional four-stroke V6 engine, packing the exhaust system neatly in the bank of the 60-degree V.

As for our two-strokes that boast high power output from a smaller displacement, Yamaha has answered the call for more efficient combustion to meet today’s emissions requirements with another bold advance in marine engine technology – our HPDI fuel injection system.

Joining the line up of Yamaha models utilising this High Pressure Direct Injection system this year is the Z300A, the world’s first 300hp direct injection model. Also filling out the HPDI model line-up are the Z250F, Z200P and the Z150Q. Among these, the new Z300A, Z250F and the existing Z250D feature dramatic increases in combustion efficiency by pumping up the injection pressure to an unprecedented 70kg/cm2. (Pressure on the new Z200P and Z150Q and the existing Z200N, Z175G and Z150P is 50kg/cm2).

The result is clean-running two-strokes that clear EPA2006 emissions standards by big margins and boast lower fuel consumption as well.
