The term "new technology outboard" refers to the new direct injected 2-Strokes like Mercury and Mariner's OptiMax models, and also to four-stroke models. These outboards have greatly reduced hydrocarbon emissions as well as improved fuel efficiency and operating characteristics.
The new direct injected 2-Strokes, as well as four-strokes, achieve greater than 80% reductions in hydrocarbon emissions, compared with conventional 2-Strokes. Larger four-strokes emit fewer hydrocarbons than most current Direct Injection 2-Strokes, but more nitrous oxides and carbon monoxide. The fuel efficiency of Direct Injection 2-Strokes is, on average, better than four-strokes - especially at trolling speeds.
Why do we need both 2-Stroke and four-stroke technologies?
Due to their lighter weight and high performance, 2-Stroke engines are generally preferred. They are best suited to applications that require either small engine portability or high performance, lightweight power. On the other hand, four-strokes are generally suited to applications appropriate to the lower horsepower range. Some of those applications obviously overlap 2-Strokes.
The new mid-range Mariner four-stroke EFIs bring you the same smooth, quiet, clean performance of other Mariner four-strokes, but by adding in electronic fuel injection, traditional horsepower limitations have been shattered. Full cowls, an air intake silencer and through-prop exhaust are further low-noise features. Overhead cam design makes possible idling speeds as low as 750 rpm, making Mariner four-strokes ideal for fishing boat applications. And there is no mixing of petrol and oil, as two separate systems are in place to deliver fuel/air to the cylinders and oil to the lubrication points.
